Boston, London, Coventry, Dublin & New York for $316.13

Piccadilly Circus

Piccadilly Circus in London

My next big adventure is going to Boston, London, Dublin and New York. All of these flights cost a grand total of $316.13. The Dub-NYC segment is business class and the JFK-LAX segment is 1st class.

Last year there was a great airfare sale on Wow Airlines, flying out of Boston via Reykjavik (where we change planes and I really hope something is open at the airport during the nearly 3 hours we spend there but we arrive at 4 AM!). It was only $99 one way to London. I upgraded my seats to extra large legroom and paid extra for a carry on bag (they limit the weight to 5kg, so I had to pay for more). The grand total was $185.

Next I spent 62,500 AA frequent flyer miles and $46.60 for a flight from Dublin stopping overnight in New York, and then back to LAX. The flight from Dublin to JFK is in Business Class and the JFK-LAX segment is 1st Class. I decided to fly back from Dublin because the tax was only $46.60. If I flew from London, It would have been $300 more.

Since I had to get to Dublin, I booked a cheap Ryan Air flight from Birmingham to Dublin. It was $16.43. I’ll be staying at my cousin’s house in Coventry for a couple of days so Birmingham is the closest airport.

I have to get to Boston to start my trip.  I had a $100 e-certificate on United because our flight home from Honolulu this summer got cancelled and they had to put us on other flights so they gave us the certificate to say Sorry. I used it for the one way and paid only $68.10. Now I’m trying to figure out hotels.

I’m staying 3 nights in Boston, 7 nights in England, 3 in Dublin and 1 in New York.

I’m currently trying to figure out where to stay to minimize costs.  My friend in Boston kindly offered to let me stay so that’s taken care of.  I also have a friend in London that I will stay with for at least part of the trip.  A couple of nights in Coventry at my cousin’s is also planned.  I booked 2 nights using Hilton points at the Hilton Dublin Kilmainham.  I also have a Hilton free weekend night certificate which I am going to use for the final night in Dublin.  I am not sure which hotel I will book.  The Conrad looks great and is very expensive, the Doubletree Morrison looks amazing too, but it might be easier just to book a third night at Kilmainham.

For my night in New York, I am toying with the idea of not getting a hotel at all.  I have a 6am flight back to Los Angeles and will have to be at the airport by 4:30 at the latest.  I could just stay up and enjoy New York City and get to the airport extra early.  Since I will be flying first class it should be no problem to sleep on the plane ride home!
